After many years in the Private Sector working in sales and management I decided to jump into the Public Sector when my own community was in political turmoil; nasty lawsuits with a neighboring city, recalls and resignations of the Governing Board members, and general public distrust. I mean, what better time to get my feet wet in local government, right? I just knew the business skills I had honed over my professional career working for some of the worlds most respected companies would transfer to governance. And they do!
However, working in the corporate world for a for-profit business is vastly different than working to maximize service delivery using your neighbors tax dollars. They are more different than they are alike in most areas, but solid strategic planning, treating your customers with respect, being transparent in your motives and actions, investing in your employees, and under promising and over delivering work in both the Private and Public Sectors equally well. I now have 11 years of Public Sector management combined with 30 years in the Private Sector, and while I have dabbled in operational consulting for a few organizations over the years I decided the time was right to put my skills to work helping as many communities as I can, hence the launch of this new venture.
As a life long student of Leadership, and Continuous Improvement, the opportunity to attend and participate in hundreds of educational seminars, workshops, webinars, etc., provided a spark of an idea to make these same Leadership exercises available to as many local governments as possible. I mean, when the most successful companies in the world continually see the value of delivering these training experiences to their employees based on the ROI to the bottom line, why do we not invest the same efforts in our own government employees and elected leaders? The goal of Great Lakes Municipal Consultants LLC is simply to foster better and more transparent local government through investment in proven communication platforms and business techniques that increase the trust of the citizens in their local city hall.
